Prebends Bridge

Crossing the River Wear at the southern end of the bailey, Prebends Bridge was built in 1777. Turner painted from here and at the west end a plaque features Sir Walter Scott’s words: "Grey towers of Durham, yet well I love thy mixed and massive piles, half church of God, half castle ‘gainst the Scot, and long to roam these venerable aisles, with records stored of deeds long since forgot."
