Durham Cathedral stands majestically above the River Wear. One of the finest examples of Norman architecture in the world, the construction was begun in 1093 by Bishop William St Carileph, and his design was completed by 1135, although there have been many subsequent additions. This viewpoint was recently voted one of the best in the country .
